Reviews Report

  • AM Best assigns GEICO an A++ (Superior) Financial Strength Rating with a Stable outlook—the highest level on AM Best’s scale.
  • Broad set of auto insurance discounts, including equipment, driver, bundle, affiliation, and telematics (DriveEasy); availability and savings vary by state.
  • Leadership in J.D. Power’s latest U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study shifts year to year and by journey (Service vs. Shopping); GEICO ranked highest in 2021, while the most recent study names different carriers for each.

Geico Insurance, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., is one of the largest auto insurers in the U.S. Based on the latest NAIC market share data, GEICO currently ranks No. 3 nationally in private passenger auto by direct premiums written, behind State Farm and Progressive. For industry context, see the Insurance Information Institute’s industry overview

Originally called the Government Employees Insurance Company when it was founded in 1936 in Texas, Geico now offers coverage for auto, homeowners, life, liability, and more, although it is probably most known for its car insurance — along with the ubiquitous ads featuring the cartoon gecko. Home policies are generally placed through the GEICO Insurance Agency with non-affiliated partner insurers. It insures more than 28 million vehicles, and is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Geico insurance reviews remain generally positive for auto, and its financial strength is exceptional: AM Best currently rates the GEICO Companies A++ (Superior) with a Stable outlook; the group’s Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating is aa+.

Geico Auto Insurance

Geico is best known for auto insurance, offering coverage for vehicles of all kinds, including motorcycles, ATVs, RVs, classic cars, commercial vehicles, as well as policies for those traveling to Mexico. In addition to the basic liability coverage that is required in most states, it has insurance options for collision and comprehensive, medical payments, emergency roadside assistance, uninsured motorist, rental, and mechanical breakdown.

Geico auto insurance customers will find an extensive list of discounts to help lower rates. Savings span equipment/safety features (air bags, anti-lock brakes, anti-theft), good driver, defensive driving/driver’s ed and good student programs, multi-vehicle and multi-policy bundles, affiliation programs (including military and federal employee), and telematics via DriveEasy. Eligibility and amounts vary by state and coverage.

Geico car insurance makes it easy for policyholders to report a claim online and manage their account digitally. You can use Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant to manage your account hands-free, and a mobile app allows you to access your ID cards, call for roadside service, and get estimates on repairs quickly. The app is available for both iPhones and Android devices.

Strengths: Geico offers a broad range of auto insurance discounts; strong mobile experience. Overall, the Geico insurance app is highly rated—around 4.8 out of five on iOS and around 4.6–4.7 on Android.

Restrictions: Limited optional coverages to customize your policy; for example, it does not offer gap coverage. Although the app is highly rated overall, some users report occasional authentication/biometric hiccups after updates and battery impact when using the DriveEasy telematics feature.

Discounts: Geico highlights a wide array of discounts across equipment, driver, multi-policy/vehicle, and affiliations; notably, it offers a federal employee (Eagle) discount and military savings (including a separate Emergency Deployment discount).

Geico Home Insurance

Geico offers home insurance through the GEICO Insurance Agency, with policies underwritten by non-affiliated partner carriers. Offerings include homeowners, renters, condo/co-op, mobile home, and landlord coverage. Standard protections typically include dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, personal liability, and guest medical; optional add-ons such as scheduled personal property or water backup may be available depending on the issuing carrier.

Considering the high number of auto insurance discounts that it offers, Geico home insurance discounts are much more limited. However, you may earn a discount for bundling your car and homeowner insurance, as well as discounts for having a home security system, smoke detectors, or fire extinguishers.

As is true with Geico’s auto insurance, policyholders have easy access to managing their account digitally, either on the website or via the mobile app. For homeowners, quoting and claims may be handled by the partner carrier. J.D. Power’s U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study notes that leaders change year to year between the Service and Shopping journeys as expectations for speed and mobile performance rise.

Strengths: Competitive pricing; digital experience

Restrictions: Customization and endorsements vary by partner; some add-ons (e.g., water backup, scheduled personal property, identity theft services) may not be available in all states

Discounts: Limited discounts for homeowners

Geico Life Insurance

Geico does not underwrite life insurance. Quotes and policy placement are provided through the GEICO Insurance Agency’s partner, LifeQuotes, Inc., which connects shoppers with non-affiliated insurers for term, whole, and universal life; availability varies by state and insurer.
